Sumarry:

It has been demonstrated recently that remote optical sensing techniques like Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Laser Induced Incandescence (LII) are relevant to aero-engine exhaust gases measurement.

At the same time, aircraft engine industry stresses the need for an exhaust gases measurement method compatible with cost effectiveness, short-term implementation, fast availability of results and accuracy meeting ICAO emission certification needs.

The AEROTEST project will develop the non-intrusive methods listed above, applied in the real world of an industrial operating environment, to be used routinely by engine manufacturers both in development test programmes and for engine health monitoring (EHM).

AEROTEST objective is to achieve a high level of confidence in aircraft engine emission measurements with a view to using the technique for engine emissions certification. The pollutants addressed in the project are CO2, CO, NO, NO2, UHC and soot particles.

The first and main objective is to address the quality and standardisation issues so that the remote optical technique is recognised by the industry and the regulation authorities as a standard which can be used for engine emission certification.

A complete QA/QC approach will be followed, at all levels (instrument, operation, data format) to insure accuracy and repeatability of the technique. Procedures for instrument calibration, set up and operation will be developed. Validity of the data will be verified in laboratories and in test beds. All this stresses the need for fundamental and experimental studies on calibration, inversion methods and models to achieve the accuracy and repeatability goals.

The second objective is to explore applications of the emissions measurement instrument for gas turbine monitoring. The ability to perform non-intrusive measurements rapidly and cheaply allows the use of emissions data health monitoring, ageing studies and continuous emission monitoring, which will lead to reduction in emissions from in-service engines.

Although AEROTEST is limited to gas turbines, the same techniques can be applied to other types of exhaust, leading to a wide range of possibilities in health and continuous emission monitoring.
